NYTT LAND comment: “The title ‘The Song of the Shaman’s Assistant’ actually means the song, which the assistant performs when the shaman makes the transition between worlds”, throat singer and multi-instrumentalist Anatoly Pakhalenko clarifies. “Through this song, the helper completes the rite of transition by picking up the rhythm of the shaman’s drum. This track, like all the other songs on this album, is a recording of an authentic Tunguso-Manchu shamanic ritual. Its lyrics have come down to us from ancient Chinese sources. We did not translate the song into a modern language, but recorded it in its most original sound in order to preserve and convey all the energy and ancient power of this traditional shamanic rituals.” |

Shamanism has become an item of Western pop culture that is quite randomly attached to any kind of new age esoteric phenomena involving animistic elements and trance-like experiences but also referred to regarding religious and magical aspects of barely understood ancient cultures. In a more strict sense, the term refers to spiritual practices of indigenous Siberian peoples. Its practitioners, the shamans, interact with the spirit world through altered states of consciousness as protectors of their communities.
On their album “Songs of the Shaman”, NYTT LAND interpret traditional shamanic songs or spells of Siberia’s Manchu–Tungus ethno-linguistic groups. These songs use ancient musical techniques such as throat singing and drums and they were recorded in their original language. The latter was done to preserve the power that lies in the sound and the phonetics as well as the rhythm of the texts. This collection of primordial magic in the shape of songs summoning spirits, incantations, and wards has been carefully selected and deliberately excludes spells that are aimed at causing harm. NYTT LAND came into being as a ritualistic Nordic folk band envisioned by the husband and wife duo Natalya and Anatoly Pakhalenko in the Western Siberian town Kalachinsk, on the banks of River Om and crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railway, in August 2013. Following three self-released albums, “Nytt Land” (2013), “Hávamál” (2015), and “Scopun: Songs from the Elder Edda” (2016), their label debut “Fimbulvinter” came out in 2017 and was followed by the 2018 full-length “Oðal”. These releases opened many doors for the duo, who performed across Europe at viking, folk, and metal festivals – including the UK at the York Viking Centre Festival in 2018. Even before “Fimbulvinter” hit the stores worldwide, NYTT LAND had already supported several Russian concerts of the Norwegian genre pioneers WARDRUNA in 2016 and 2017. While NYTT LAND also continued to self-release albums, the Siberian elements in their music began to surface stronger than before on their third label full-length “Ritual”. The composer couple also takes inspiration from the vast natural landscapes and forests surrounding their home and includes the calls of ravens and other natural sounds. True to their often dark and mysterious subjects, the lyrics of NYTT LAND echo myth and stories from Norse and Siberian legends and historic sources and are told in the languages of both indigenous Siberian tribes and Old Norse. With “Songs of the Shaman”, NYTT LAND take the ones willing to hear on a journey to a place in time and space where spirits rule and even gods fear to tread. Listen with caution!
